Kinesiology taping was first invented in 1970 by Dr. Kenzo Kase. As an Japanese-American trained chiropractor and acupuncturist, he was able to combine both mainstream and traditional methods for healing. He realized one day that even though he was able to realign the joints of elderly patients, once they got home, the joint will return to the place as before and relive the old habit over again.
Using the tape that was available back then was stiff and rigid, this created the problem of giving individuals rash and it was unable to move the joint the way it was needed. He knew then that the a new way of tape was necessary for the recovery of individuals and that leads us here.
How does it help?
During an injury, there’s blood and fluids that build up the surrounding area which causes inflammation and swelling. If inflammation is too great, the excess will not be able to be removed by the lymphatic system. Essentially what happens the lymphatic vessels become compressed and both oxygen and nutrients are unable to be delivered to the healing tissues.
So what is kinesiology taping? Kinesiology taping is a science-based technique used to lift the skin up with a hypoallergenic, lightweight material to create space for the injured muscle and fluids to be drained for a faster healing time. The sensation of felt from the nerves of your skin disrupts the pain signals into the injured area and improves circulation for fluid movement, lymphatic drainage and reduction of swelling. This also helps with compensation reactions of other parts of your body while it’s in recovery.
Kinesiology also helps to support the injured muscles and joints without restricting the range of motion that traditional taping did. This, combined with the ability to help with muscle imbalance by unloaded a certain area and then taping it over where it should for biomechanical corrective positioning and the usage of the proper muscles and joints.
